More people call this through the common term, car. This term was said to be lifted from carrus or carrum, Latin word that means wheeled vehicle. There are some people who believe that this word originates from the word carre that means cart in Middle English. And there are those that claim that it comes from the word that means Gallic wagon, or karros.

The first steam-powered mechanical vehicle was built around 1672 by a Jesuit mission member in China, Ferdinand Verbiest. It was designed only as a toy and was made specifically for the Chinese Emperor. It was working and it can run, but this vehicle was unable to carry anyone aboard, may it be a driver or passenger.
In 1769, Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built the very first self-propelled mechanical vehicle. In 1780s, Russia attempted to create a contribution in the field through Ivan Kulibin. He was able to develop a three-wheeled carriage that can be pedaled by human and included modern features like the brake, bearings, flywheel and gear box. The development was halted before it even became a success. The evolution in the industry was followed by Richard Trevithick in 1801 when he did not only build but he also was able to demonstrate the steam-powered road locomotive that he termed as the Puffing Devil.
The Swiss Inventor Francois Isaac de Rivaz designed the pioneer when it comes to internal combustion engine in 1806. This was fueled by the mixture that is composed of oxygen and hydrogen. This was used by other inventors of automobiles but did not attain real success due to the clumsy appeal of the internal combustion engines.
There have been a lot of innovations since then. But one name comes to mind when speaking about the ultimate automobile. It was Karl Benz that was hailed as the inventor of modern automobile.
